My name is Modesta. I am a proud mother who resides in Chicago. I was born in a small town in Guerrero, Mexico, and came to the United States as a young woman full of dreams and a determined spirit. One of my dreams was to provide my children with an education in the United States. I held multiple jobs—working in hotels and factories, selling balloons, and building my network as an Avon and Mary Kay representative. Motivated by my desire for freedom to manage my time, I opened Sinfonía Del Mar restaurant in 2003. We had little money, but my family and I made it happen. I love feeding my community and supporting them by contributing to scholarships for students, donating food to those in need, and protecting my community from harm by demanding respect. My advice for anyone who wants to start their own business is to stay positive. Along the way, you will spend a lot of time building your business while losing time with your family, but success will happen step by step. For the last 22 years, customers have kept returning to Sinfonia del Mar for our signature dishes, such as Combinación Campesina, handmade tortillas, and café de olla. My dream for my children to pursue an education in the United States is a reality, and the restaurant is my achievement. I have many more dreams to pursue.

Many migrant women workers, including farmworkers, face workplace conditions that worsen mental health, such as harassment in the workplace, wage theft and lack of paid family leave. People who migrate for work, such as those employed in agriculture, face a variety of challenges with accessing mental health care. Join Justice for Migrant Women as we call on our elected leaders to expand access to mental health resources for all people employed in agriculture.
